El azúcar es el nuevo tabaco

Expertos del Reino Unido, Estados Unidos y Canadá han lanzado la campaña 'Action on Sugar' (Acción contra el Azúcar) para sensibilizar contra el excesivo consumo de azúcar, ya que la consideran como el 'nuevo tabaco', y como una de las causas de los índices de obesidad y del alto riesgo de sufrir diabetes.
La campaña tiene la finalidad de concienciar a los ciudadanos sobre esta amenaza y presionar a Gobiernos y empresas alimentarias para que reduzcan los niveles de azúcar "innecesario".

A new global campaign will bring together experts and policy makers to tackle the current global epidemic of obesity and diabetes by reducing 'unnecessarily high' levels of sugar in food and beverage products.

McDonald's Clarifies Plan to Remove Soda from Happy Meals

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation and McDonald’s released an updated agreement that clarifies that the chain will indeed phase out listing soda on the kids’ meal section of its menu boards. Taking soda off the Happy Meal section of menu boards at McDonald’s is an important step toward healthier kids meals and healthier children. It is a step that should be immediately adopted by Burger King, Wendy’s, and other restaurants.

La Ministra de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad, Ana Mato, y el Consejero Delegado de ATRESMEDIA, Silvio González, han firmado un convenio de colaboración que tiene como objetivo desarrollar acciones de sensibilización y concienciación en materia de prevención de la obesidad infantil. Este convenio tendrá como marco de actuación EL ESTIRÓN, la iniciativa de Responsabilidad Corporativa de ATRESMEDIA que nació en mayo de 2011.

Negative public health campaigns may undermine weight loss goals

Public health campaigns that stigmatize obese people by using negative images or text do not motivate them to lose weight any more than more neutral campaigns, finds a new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. In fact, negative campaigns may backfire by undermining a person's belief that he or she is capable of losing weight.

L'assiette des enfants: une enquête surprenante des médecins de l'ASEF*

En France un enfant sur cinq serait touché par le surpoids. Problème alimentaire, manque d’activités : il est parfois difficile d’inverser la tendance pour les parents. Les médecins de l’ASEF ont mené une enquête auprès de plus de 910 écoliers pour faire le point sur leur alimentation et les sensibiliser aux liens entre leur assiette et leur santé.

Un 28% de los niños sufre sobrepeso u obesidad

El exceso de peso en la población infantil sigue siendo un tema preocupante. Según un estudio realizado en 20.588 niños de distintos municipios españoles, el 21,2% sufre sobrepeso y el 7,1%, obesidad. En los más pequeños, aquellos que tienen entre tres y cinco años, más de uno de cada cinco tiene exceso de peso (el 5,7%, con obesidad y el 16,2%, con sobrepeso).

Coca-Cola, contra la obesidad en su última campaña publicitaria


Coca-Cola ha lanzado en España el segundo spot publicitario de la campaña ¿Y si nos levantamos? en el que invita a "levantarse" contra las estadísticas que auguran un alto grado de sedentarismo y obesidad para el año 2030. 
Además, Coca-Cola  ha puesto en marcha la página web "cambialasestadisticas.com" en la que expone los vídeos de la campaña así como varias sugerencias de acciones concretas y actividades lúdicas o deportivas para llevar una vida activa: Utilizar más las escaleras en lugar del ascensor;  Ir a trabajar en bicicleta; Probar a "dominar el skate"; Hacer excursiones; Probar el parapente o el patinaje.

Childhood obesity calculator may be most accurate predictor yet

Researchers say they can predict a newborn baby's odds of becoming an obese child using a simple new calculation.

The new formula factors in six easily-available pieces of information: a child's birth weight, body mass index measurements of its parents, the number of people in the household, what type of occupation the mother has and whether or not she smoked while pregnant.

A campaign to urge Nickelodeon to stop advertising junk food to children.

Center for Science in the Public Interest organize a campaign in Internet to urge Nickelodeon to follow Disney's lead and stop advertising junk food to children.

This year, the Walt Disney Company announced it will no longer accept advertisements for junk food on its child-directed television, radio, and online sites.  Disney also updated its nutrition standards for foods that can be advertised to children.

As the number one entertainment company for children, the CSPI consider that Nickelodeon has enormous influence over children’s food choices and ask to write to Nickelodeon and urge them to stop advertising unhealthy food and drinks to kids.

Social Media Could Help Curb Childhood Obesity, Heart Association Says

The American Heart Association has published a statement suggesting that social media might be an effective tool in the fight against childhood obesity.

According to the statement, variables that contribute to the success of a Web-based obesity intervention strategy include:
- Family involvement with the intervention;
- The degree of interaction between the children and their counselor or support group; and
- The frequency with which children used the online programs.

Obesity in Young Is Seen as Falling in Several American Cities

After decades of rising childhood obesity rates, several American cities are reporting their first declines.

The trend has emerged in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, as well as smaller places like Anchorage, Alaska, and Kearney, Neb. The state of Mississippi has also registered a drop, but only among white students.

Obese children more vulnerable to food advertising

Amanda S. Bruce, PhD, and colleagues from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas Medical Center assessed 10 healthy weight and 10 obese children, ages 10-14 years, using both self-reported measures of self-control and functional magnetic resonance imaging, which uses blood flow as a measure of brain activity. Dr. Bruce states, “We were interested in how brain responses to food logos would differ between obese and healthy weight children.” The children were shown 60 food logos and 60 nonfood logos, and functional magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated which sections of the brain reacted to the familiar logos being shown.

What would Batman eat?: priming children to make healthier fast food choices

An article in Pediatric Obesity show how the authors investigated whether either of two priming tactics – the priming of a role model's food choices or the priming of healthy foods – could influence children to make healthier fast food choices.
When children were asked what various admirable people – such as Batman or Spiderman – would eat, 45% chose apple slices over French fries.
Advising a parent to ask their child ‘What would Batman (or another admired character or person) eat?’ might be an easy step to take in what could be a healthier fast food world.

New Anti-Obesity Ads Blaming Overweight Parents Spark Criticism The ads were created by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota "Our intent in creating these ads was really just to show good parents having moments of realization that they needed to change their own behavior in order to send the right message to their kid," Marc Manley says (Vice President and Chief Pevention Officer) He says, the problem of obesity in Minnesota and nationwide is so tough, they needed a new, more dramatic approach.

Are we fighting obesity or obese people?

According to a new study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity at Yale, the public responds more favorably to obesity-related health campaigns that emphasize specific health behaviors and personal empowerment for health, rather than messages that imply personal blame and stigmatize those who are obese.
