Kids around world now recognize cigarette brand logos

In a notable 1991 study, researchers found that 91% of 6-year-olds surveyed were able to correctly match Old Joe, the Camel cigarettes cartoon character logo, with a picture of a cigarette — nearly equal to the number of kids who correctly matched Mickey Mouse with the Disney Channel logo.

Twenty-two years later, a new study finds that cigarette manufacturers' efforts to reach young children internationally in low- and middle-income countries is nearly as effective, and consequently as worrisome.

L'OMS voudrait interdire toute forme de publicité pour le tabac

En vue de la Journée mondiale du tabac, vendredi 31 mai, l'OMS a lancé un nouvel appel à une interdiction totale de toute forme de publicité du tabac. Le tabagisme est à l'origine de la mort prématurée de six millions de personnes par an, selon l'agence de l'ONU.
L'interdiction de toute forme de publicité et de promotion des produits du tabac est l'une des manières les plus efficaces de réduire la consommation, en particulier celle des jeunes, a affirmé le Dr Douglas Bettcher, directeur pour la prévention des maladies à l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS). La consommation a été réduite de 7 % en moyenne dans les pays où une telle interdiction est en vigueur.

La OMS quiere prohibir totalmente la publicidad, la promoción y el patrocinio del tabaco

El 31 de mayo, la OMS celebra el Día Mundial Sin Tabaco, dedicado a resaltar los riesgos para la salud asociados al consumo de tabaco y promover políticas eficaces para reducir ese consumo. 

El tema del Día Mundial Sin Tabaco 2013 es la prohibición de la publicidad, la promoción y el patrocinio del tabaco. La epidemia mundial de tabaquismo mata cada año a casi 6 millones de personas, de las cuales más de 600 000 son no fumadores que mueren por respirar humo ajeno.

America's Most Wanted Tobacco Villains

Tobacco companies continue to heavily promote traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (also called chewing or spit tobacco). As cigarette smoking has declined, they also have introduced a new generation of tobacco products that put kids at risk, including cheap, sweet small cigars and novel forms of smokeless tobacco, some of which look and are packaged like candy.

'570 children a day' start smoking

About 207,000 11 to 15-year-olds take up smoking every year in the UK, a charity has warned.
Cancer Research UK said government figures suggested 570 children smoked for the first time every day.

Anti-smoking: A short film competition aimed at young people

The Deborah Hutton Campaign, present a social media Project: Cut Films.
It is an annual national short film competition, to educate young people about smoking in a creative way. Rather than being passive viewers, young people working collaboratively can use this campaign to actively raise aspirations and convince their peers to reconsider their behaviour and attitudes towards smoking.
